Key West Vacation Food Edition Pt. 1

Frozen Margarita

At the beginning of the month, we went on a much needed vacation to Key West.  It was awesome!  As we left LaGuardia, we flew right over Harlem/Bronx where I snapped this pic.  If you squint, you can see our neighborhood!

And before we knew it, we had left NYC and were in paradise…

We went snorkeling, kayaking, biking, swimming, visited sandbars, hung out at the beach, and had lots to eat – of course.  Rather than talk about everything we did, I’m just going to share some of our favorite drinks and dishes…

Buffalo Chicken wrap and coleslaw with fruit.  The buffalo chicken wrap I had at the hotel after we landed was awesome.  The chicken was lightly breaded with buffalo sauce, and wrapped in fresh lettuce and tomatoes.  The coleslaw had fruit – magoes and pineapple.  A great tropical twist to a picnic favorite.

Beach/Pool reading – Fatima opted in for Mindy Kaling’s (we love her show The Mindy Project on FOX) book Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, and I went for Ashley’s recommended Captive Audience: The Television Industry and Monopoly Power in the new Gilded Age by Susan Crawford.  We loved them both!

There’s just something so relaxing about reading a book on the beach, with the sounds of the crashing waves in the background…

At the end of our 12 mile bike ride around the island, we stopped at a place called Dante’s to refuel and cool off.  Fatima had a delicious summer salad with strawberries, candied walnuts, goat cheese, baby spinach, topped with a strawberry vinaigrette – deeelish.  I had a tropical cobb salad – also yummy.  And to wash it all down, a frozen margarita.  No Marquisrita, but still yummy.

Fatima rode a trike for 12 miles.  Her thighs were killing the next day…

And we visited a butterfly conservatory, where 1200 butterflies were fluttering all around us.  It was as if we were in a fairy wonderland.

And lots of beautiful sunsets…
